PRESS RELEASE: Comfort and Joy – A Bit of Sweden Comes to Evergreen Cultural Centre

 2016-final_comfort-and-joy-8-5x11FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Coquitlam BC – November 22, 2016

A bit of Sweden comes to the Evergreen Cultural Centre on December 11

Coastal Sound Choirs once again surprise and delight with their annual holiday concert, Comfort and Joy. This year, the choral celebration on Sunday December 11th begins with the centuries-old Swedish tradition of Sankta Lucia, where a processional of white robed choristers sings the Swedish Sankta Lucia songs by candlelight. As in Sweden, a singer dressed as Sankta Lucia–Saint Lucy–wears a crown of candles on her head, leading the procession of choristers. It is said that by celebrating Saint Lucy’s Day, the patron saint of light, one will be able to cope and live through the long winter days.

“Our Children’s Choir was asked if we might be able to re-enact a Sankta Lucia processional, and I fell in love with the luminous music that is part of this tradition,” says artistic director Diana Clark. “We actually have a singer named Lucy in the choir this year, so it was easy to decide who would be wearing the crown of candles!”

Although we don’t have the same kind of dark and snowy winters that they do in Sweden, Coastal Sound is bringing some of that candlelight glow to the Evergreen Cultural Centre.

“In Sweden, the processional includes “Star Boys” that wear tall white hats with stars on them, but we have instead put our own spin on this idea, weaving in our own local traditions,” explains Clark, who is known for her creative productions.

Listeners can expect to really get into the spirit of the season, with audience sing- a-longs, thoughtful piano interludes, rousing pieces sung by a massed choir of 100 singers, and the warmth of emotion that the music evokes.

In these family-friendly holiday concerts, you will grin at the adorable youngsters, sing-along exuberantly and enjoy holiday music old and new. You will be ready for winter and the Christmas season after Coastal Sound singers wrap you in sweet sounds!

On December 11th Comfort & Joy concerts includes singers “small to tall” in a well-paced and varied program that audiences have come to expect and love from Coastal Sound choirs.

PRESS RELEASE: See Amid the Winter Snow Christmas with Coastal Sound Youth Choir

Coquitlam BC – November 21, 2016

Celebrate the Beauty of the Season with Coastal Sound Youth Choir

Winter wonderlands aren’t always made of snow. Coastal Sound Youth Choir creates nature-inspired beauty with their 50 luminous and expressive voices, along with their new conductor Joel Tranquilla and pianist David Antoniuk.

The imaginative program sparkles with songs you’ll love: standard choral repertoire such as Bach’s motet Lobet den Herrn all Heiden and Lauridsen’s Sure on This Shining Night; recently composed works by outstanding Canadian composers such as Jeff Enns and Jason Jestadt; and new arrangements of pop songs like Joni Mitchell’s River and Imogen Heap’s Can’t Take It In.

Listeners can expect to really get into the spirit of the season, with audience sing- a-longs, thoughtful piano interludes, rousing pieces sung by a massed choir of 100 singers, and the warmth of emotion that the music evokes.

“I try to build concert programs as though I’m an art curator putting together a series of installations. Some Baroque with Neoclassic here, a Marian motet alongside Leonard Cohen there…Joni Mitchell and Debussy are in dialogue while Sondheim introduces a gospel number. I like variety, and I always hope that there will be something for everyone in the audience,”  says conductor Joel Tranquilla.

The Coastal Sound Youth Choir has become known in the Canadian choral community for their passionate and imaginative performances. The choir is made up of 50 young people aged 16-24, representing over ten different municipalities from across the Metro Vancouver area of British Columbia. Eclectic, heartfelt, creative, and full of the energy and determination of youth, Coastal Sound Youth Choir performances have become a destination for music fans across the region.

This is the first concert for the choir under the artistic direction of Dr. Joel Tranquilla. Tranquilla, a singer himself, also serves as associate conductor of the Canadian Chamber Choir, and brings a highly skilled and vibrant energy to the group. David Antoniuk, a brilliant young pianist, joins the Coastal Sound Music Academy team this season.

Also on the program, cameo performances by Coastal Sound Children’s Choir and adult group DeCoro.

Coastal Sound Volunteers Needed to Manage IKEA Christmas Tree Lot – Winter 2016

Do you love the smell of freshly cut coniferous trees? Want to feel instantly festive? Volunteer at our Christmas Tree Lot at IKEA Coquitlam for all this, and more!

For the 7th year in a row, volunteers from Coastal Sound Music, their friends and families, will run the Christmas Tree lot at IKEA Coquitlam.  IKEA

By doing this, Coastal Sound is able to fund many singers through our bursary program, so that no singer is ever denied access to our programs because of financial need.

It’s fun, festive and very fragrant!

At the time of on-line registration, all CSMA members were given information outlining the requirement that every singer- family contribute at least 2 x four hour shift of volunteer time. To be clear: 2 shifts per FAMILY.

Here is the help we need:

  • TREE LOT MANAGER SHIFTS:  We require TREE LOT MANAGERS to stop by the lot every day.  The TREE LOT MANAGER is an important role as each shift is responsible for various duties with the most important being that the lot is opened and closed and ensuring volunteers have showed up for their shifts. Should a volunteer not show up , the manager will be required to stay on site if less than two volunteers have reported for duty.  We ask that in order to sign up for this role, you can sign up for multiple time slots.  Most of the morning and closing slots are filled however we need afternoon and evening managers.  For a detailed description of this role visit :  ikea-master-summary-website-2016 or contact our office.
  • “SALES” SHIFTS:  require a team of 2 to 3 people depending on the date and time. Each of these shifts is about 4 hours long. A “sales” shift doesn’t actually involve any sales … our volunteers simply staff the tree lot and mark the receipts of customers who pick up the trees they’ve purchased from IKEA cashiers in-store. Those who are physically able can also help during “sales” shifts by sweeping the lot, restocking displays and promoting Coastal Sound to interested members of the public. For more information and to sign up for one or more of these “SALES” shifts, please visit:  SALES SHIFT Sign Up
  • UNLOADING SHIFTS: on the mornings that IKEA receives their shipment of 800-1200 trees, we need a crew of 10 to move the trees to the lot and display the trees in their “racks”. These shifts happen on very specific days, in the mornings and the process takes about 2.5-3 hours. Unloading days are: November 20th & 24th, December 1st & 8th from 8 am to 11 am. For more information and to sign up for one or more of these UNLOADING shifts, please visit:  UNLOADING SHIFT Sign Up
  • ON-CALL SHIFTS: Are you able to be on call to pop over to IKEA in the event that a scheduled volunteer does not show up? Your help here will go a long way in ensuring we have peace of mind this will be another successful year for this important fundraiser. These shifts can only count towards the minimum required as a part of the CSMA fundraiser if you actually get called in, but we sure appreciate you being on- call!!! For more information and to sign up for one or more of these ON-CALL shifts, please visit: ON CALL SHIFT Sign Up

The only requirement is that volunteers MUST be 15 years or older.Volunteers under 19 should plan to sign up with a responsible person who is 19+.  Please also note that we MUST have at least 2 people on the lot to meet our contract agreement – if you can no longer make your shift, please make every effort to find someone to cover for you.

Here’s how the sign-up links above work in 3 easy steps:
1) Click the link for the job you’d like to help with
2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.
3) Sign up! It’s Easy – you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on

Note: SignUp does not share your email address with anyone but if you prefer not to use your email address, please contact and our office can sign you up manually.

Please check the times carefully when you sign up as some shifts are slightly longer to coincide with store hours.

No matter what shift you sign up for, you will have a good time chatting with fellow Coastal Sound folks and getting in the spirit of the season surrounded by gorgeous fresh cut trees! Sign up with friends from choir or a family member who’s willing to volunteer.
