Placements & Assessments

With the exception of the pre-school Sources and the Adult Choir, all singers are asked to take part in an assessment. These assessments are to make sure CSMA singers are placed in the level at which they have the most success and fun.

In their 15-minute evaluation, all singers will be asked a few questions about why they want to join a Coastal Sound choir. Singers will usually know at the end of their assessment at which level they have been placed.

Young singers can expect the following in their assessment:

  • sing something as simple and familiar as “Happy Birthday” or “O Canada.”

Older students may be asked to do the following:

  • sing scales with piano accompaniment
  • sight-sing a short musical passage.

CSMA’s year runs from September to June.  Current CSMA singers are evaluated by their directors in April/ May for placement the following fall. Placement for new students continues through September and January each year.
